Un véhicule électrique d'un type assez particulier a été développé par une équipe du LEI, Laboratoire d'électronique industrielle à l'EPFL. Sans se préoccuper des applications spécifiques en premier rang, les auteurs se sont intéressés à une structure toute nouvelle, et à ses performances inédites.

Les ingénieurs ont pu faire fonctionner un engin plus que révolutionnaire, qui est capable de faire demi-tour sans manœuvrer.

Emotions parce que c'est un peu comme lorsqu'un enfant réussit ses premiers pas seul, après avoir fait des tentatives multiples, quand on le lâche prudemment et qu'on le rattrape pour éviter qu'il ne s'abîme en tombant. Le 25 janvier 2000, le premier exploit est atteint, après tous les efforts intenses qui ont été fournis, modifiant paramètre après paramètre, pour essayer d'obtenir enfin les conditions d'un vrai équilibre pour cet engin assez peu conventionnel. suite de l'historique...

• 22nd April 2004: Our partners at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) have successfully tested their version of JOE le pendule. Check the following movie of one of their first test runs (this is a shortened version (13 sec, 1.6MB) of the full movie that can be found here.

• 13th April 2004: Another, yet to be built, descendant of JOE le pendule is about to co-star in Robots, a "unique theater piece, funny and moving, combining the magic of the theater with the fascination that is always evoked by robots, all tied together by the universal language of music". For more information on Robots, please contact the director Christian Denisart or the robotics director Kai-Oliver Arras.

• 13th September 2002: JOE le pendule participe à l'ouverture de l'exposition "Un équilibre, déséquilibre" à l'espace des inventions à Lausanne.
